Active Wildlife Habitat Stewards

Studies done by the BC Ministry of Environment have concluded that, since the 1800’s, the following amount of habitat has been lost in the Okanagan;

  • 70% of the grasslands,
  • 90% of Okanagan River’s riparian (creek-side) habitat,
  • 85% of low-elevation wetlands.

Many of these losses occur due to development on private land.

The SOS Stewardship Program would like to acknowledge the efforts of the following private landowners who are actively preventing these habitat losses on their properties.  These landowners of the south Okanagan – Similkameen areas are active wildlife habitat stewards.  They have committed to helping wildlife and species at risk by taking care of the grasslands, wetlands, or riparian (creek-side) vegetation on their properties.  Their commitment has been marked by either the signing of a voluntary Stewardship Agreement or the legal placement of a Conservation Covenant on their properties.
