Madrona Farm

Help Protect Madrona Farm Forever for Everyone!

Thanks to the overwhelming support from TLC Members, concerned citizens, local businesses and community groups all with a love for locally grown food, TLC is well on it’s way to seeing Madrona Farm protected forever. But, there is still work to be done to save this community asset. Please join the hundreds of people who believe in protecting agriculture land for future generations by making your donation to help save Madrona Farm today.

To reach our goal by May 15, 2010, we still need $224,000.

Friends and supporters of Madrona Farm have been enthusiastically promoting public purchase of the farm in the best interest of the community, the environment, and local food security. The main objective is to see this beautiful piece of farmland protected forever. Designation as Agricultural Land Reserve is insufficient to keep farmland in production and to keep the tradition of farming alive.

By seeking community support, TLC is helping to raise funds to purchase Madrona Farm for permanent protection so the ecological and agricultural values of this land will always be respected. Although David and Nathalie Chambers will continue farming the land for years to come, the future of Madrona Farm will be protected forever by TLC and the land will always be farmed organically for local food production.

Located 10 minutes from downtown Victoria on rich soils at the foot of Mount Douglas Park, Madrona Farm provides food to over 3,500 homes in the Greater Victoria area. The 27-acre farm produces a diversity of 105 crops, 12 months a year. Hundreds of customers visit the farm stand each week, local chefs rely on the farm for fresh vegetables, and food banks and shelters receive donations from Madrona.

In addition to the agricultural values of the site, Madrona Farm is also an important ecological area. A Garry Oak Meadow – three acres in size – can be found in the northeast corner of the property, and the wildlife ponds provide excellent habitat for a wide variety of bird species.

As far back as 1977, Saanich Council recognized the importance of farms like Madrona in the Blenkinsop Valley, deeming them “of irreplaceable value to the future well being and self sufficiency of the Capital Region.” Thirty years later, now that much of the farm land in this area has been lost to subdivisions of 5 and 10 acre “estates”, the need to protect farms like Madrona is even more critical.
