Kim Hanson and Ron Puhky, owners of this certified organic farm, steward their portion of Fulford Creek and the steep forested hillside backing their property.
The forested hillside contains some old growth trees, possibly the largest Arbutus tree and oldest native cherry tree on Salt Spring Island, and a number of small Garry Oak meadows. Ron has observed that the level of the spring supplying his water has increased over the years due, he thinks, to the holding capacity of the forested hillside, which is left to grow and increase in density.
Along with two other owners, they have purchased 105 additional acres on the other side of Fulford-Ganges Road which was threatened to be removed from Agricultural Land Reserve for development as an airport. Ron and Kim’s one-third of the land is used for cattle grazing, wheat and hops.
