More Information:
The collective environmental vision for the farm is to protect the water and riparian area, increase the native vegetation on the farm and provide more natural wildlife habitat. This vision, along with organic practices, water conservation methods, and diverse market gardening reflect these farmers’ commitment to land stewardship.
Water from an adjacent property where cattle graze flows through the farm and then into an outflow ditch at the road. Tests of water quality indicate coliform resulting from cattle feces. In order to do their part in reducing the amount of contaminated water which flows to the ocean from farms and developments on the Saanich Peninsula, Corner Farm has sought the help of Peninsula Streams Society. They will construct a wetland to act as a treatment pond for the water before it flows through the farm into the municipal drainage ditch along Towner Road. The project will serve as a demonstration site to other landowners.
In addition, a native plant hedgerow has been started, planting red osier dogwood as a border on the east side of the cultivated organic farm. Plans for further native plant hedgerows are in process. Hedgerows, grasses, cover crops, intercrops, and native trees are all valued and considered wildlife habitat on Corner Farm. Birds are plentiful, including eagles, flickers, red-tailed hawks, and ravens.
