The Collins’ farm includes pastures, forest and a riparian conservation area along the Somass River. Three-quarters of a mile of walking trail along the river on their farm meanders through mixed fir and maple forest, revealing spectacular vistas of Mt. Arrowsmith and the Beaufort Range. One of the most superb displays of spring wildflowers in the Alberni Valley is found along this section of river. To the north, the trail leads to the majestic old growth rain forest of Somass Park.
Bob operates a small cattle herd, entirely fed on natural grassland while Ann breeds and trains Canadian horses. The latest additions to the farm include a vegetable garden, strawberries, pastured chicken and free range pigs. The Collins’ have a café where Ann specializes in blackberry preserves and pies. Visitors are attracted to the farm for its luxury cedar cabins, campground, and Coho salmon fishing. The Collins’ have worked with the local Regional Aquatic Management Society to construct a rearing channel and pond to enhance Coho habitat. The channel and drainage creek connect to a wetland area, located on adjacent First Nation’s lands flowing into the Somass River. Old growth rain forest of Somass Park.
