“Good for the Earth, Good for People”
Bruce and Kathy Harker grew up in the Similkameen and have seen the disappearance of much of the riparian habitat in the area. Realizing the importance of this habitat, they were prompted to care for a creek running through their property. They cleaned the streamside, fenced out livestock and are letting the area regenerate with native vegetation. On the other side of their property they are preserving old and mixed-growth black cottonwood habitat. Bruce and Kathy are enthusiastic supporters of conservation and stewardship work in the Similkameen Valley. Their vision for the valley is one in which all property owners work together to create wildlife corridors along the natural riparian routes. They continually help to educate other farmers, and members of the public about how farming and local conservation initiatives can work together.
The Harkers actively work with their neighbours, Art and Lina Nugteren, to steward both sides of the stream that forms the boundary between their two properties. Together, they are setting an example for other farmers throughout the region.
