More Information:
At the north-east reach of Horse Lake, the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-op manages Horse Lake Farm, affectionately called “Betty’s Place” after Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson, who has owned the farm since 1989. When the time came for Betty to sell her property, she was adamant that the farm not be developed into a lakeside subdivision, as many nearby properties have. So Betty partnered with TLC and the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-op to maintain the property as productive farmland and valuable wildlife habitat.

Among the Co-op’s forty plus members is the Community Enhancement and Economic Development Society, or CEEDS, the group of farmers who have been leasing Betty’s Place for eighteen years. During this time, CEEDS has been not only producing delicious and nutritious food for the region; they have been exemplary stewards of the land. A rich riparian area along Longbow Creek and the lakeshore provides habitat for a vibrant wildlife population. The endangered American Badger, deer, bear, moose, skunk, otters and at least 45 different birds thrive on the farm.

Protecting this land is critical to the survival of BC’s farming and wildlife communities alike. Each member of the Co-op is part of a community that values ecological conservation, a local food supply and farmland to sustain it.
