Ten years ago, Don Cameron decided to give beekeeping a shot. In the years since, Don and his wife Gail, selling only from their twenty acre farm on Westham Island, have attracted a loyal following of customers from as far as the interior of BC. These dedicated buyers are no doubt drawn to the Camerons’ wide variety of delicious honeys, from buckwheat and dandelion to blueberry and raspberry, and for the opportunity to visit gorgeous Westham Island in Delta.

The island, home to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, sits in the mouth of the Fraser River. The Fraser Estuary is an essential stop for millions of birds that migrate along the Pacific coast each year. Over 260 species of birds have been recorded on Westham Island. The Camerons’ are committed to keeping their property as bird-friendly as possible, working with the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust to maintain a kilometer of 4.5m wide hedgerows, vegetated with a variety of native plants.

Don and Gail tend to their thirty hives much like herds of livestock. Each colony holds up to 80,000 bees and requires medication and as much as 60-70 pounds of sugary food over the winter months. There is one main difference between Don and an animal farmer: the farmer doesn’t get stung about 200 times per year!
