Ron Pither has long been a force in the world of organic farming and international political action to promote sustainable farming and fair trade practices. He was involved with the establishment of organic shade-grown coffee operations in Nicaragua and is very active in local organizations such as the BC Land Trust Alliance.

Nikky Spooner has 25 years of experience with livestock and organic market farming. Together they farm land named after the ancient Sanskrit words for the four elemental forces of water, fire, air, and earth. Varalaya comprises four acres of cultivated land in the midst of 24 acres of forest, stream and ponds. Not only does the farm produce market garden crops but the forest is sustainably harvested for timber, floral, and herbal products.

Their farming activities protect and enhance wildlife and the ecosystems on the land. Hawks, owls and ravens nest in the forest. Mallards nest in the lower pond. A walk through the forest often reveals eagles riding the updrafts resulting from the escarpment above the farm.
