TLC’s focus to date in this Region has been in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, encompassing over 28,000 square km of land and relatively few people. It is located in the high plateau country of BC’s central interior, stretching from Lillooet in the south to Quesnel, and from the Cariboo Range to Williams Lake. From the depths of the Fraser and Chilcotin Rivers, there are deep cut canyons, eroded benchlands and the dry hot grasslands of ranching country. The area also encompasses the moister areas of wetlands, lakes, tributaries and forests which run high up into the alpine zone.
Through the Conservation Partners Program, products from ranches and farms in the North Region which are sold directly to the local and BC market can be identified with the ‘butterfly’ label. Ranchers and farmers who are TLC Conservation Partners practice sustainable agriculture. They maintain grasslands and riparian areas which are critical to wildlife and biodiversity.
Also, TLC currently owns two ranch properties which are operated through agreements with ranchers. Both of these ranches are sites for our Conservation Holidays program, in which volunteers can help with stewardship projects as well as learning about the conservation of the sites. For more information about these projects, please check out the Talking Mountain Ranch and Horsefly River Conservation Area web pages.
To help with our education about conservation on working ranches, a Canadian edition of “Preserving Working Ranches in the West” has been created as a follow-up and extension tool. Copies of this document are available for $4, to cover postage and handling. Please order your copy by sending a cheque or money order to TLC Head Office.
