More Information:
Nicomekl Community Organic Farm is a 40-acre property with 25 acres of forest, hedges, ponds and riparian areas, providing opportunities for agroforestry, wildcrafting. The latter involves harvesting wild, naturally occurring plants without impacting the surrounding environment. Examples of wildcrafted species include: fiddleheads, huckleberries, and tree saps. KALE Society plans to improve and maintain the hedgerows to create diverse habitat for birds, beneficial insects and an educational resource for people to learn about native plants and birds.

Once a family-operated tree nursery, the property is now being transformed with the help of KALE CSA Society and their dedicated farmer, Stephen Gallagher (Nathan Creek Organic Farm). With over 20 years of organic farming experience, Stephen has two acres in full mixed vegetable production with five more acres in cover crops. Annual membership dues will be used to make the necessary investments in the development of the infrastructure and productive capacity of Nicomekl Community Organic Farm. Currently, 120 families belong to the KALE CSA Society.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. CSA helps to establish a sense of community and encourages land stewardship. A CSA is a mutually beneficial relationship in which a farm supports the community’s needs for fresh, nutritious, wholesome food, and community support allows farmers to devote their energies to sustainable farming practices.

CSA members are encouraged to visit the farm, explore the gardens, have picnics, or volunteer as often as they wish. Harvest and volunteer parties will be held when extra hands are needed.

Individuals wishing to obtain shares in the farm’s harvest should contact Nathan Creek Organic Farm at http://www.nathancreek.ca/. Additional information about the farm can be obtained from K.A.L.E. at www.kale.vcn.bc.ca.
