More Information:
The Miller family farm has been in operation since 1912. In recent years, Bruce and Brenda have transitioned their farm to Certified Organic. Each week they deliver fresh produce to local stores and restaurants. The strong support of local customers has created a partnership in which the customer and the farmer are protecting the environment in their own community. They are also certified as seed potato providers within this unique, quarantined valley. Pemberton potatoes are disease free and are shipped to farmers across the country. Across the Creek is one of just a few large-scale organic seed potato providers in BC.
The 500-acre farm includes pasture and cropland, as well as approximately 250 acres of wetlands and old growth cedar trees. Prior to being drained for agriculture with dykes and ditches in the 1950’s, Pemberton Valley was laced with streams and wetlands. Now, the land is fertile floodplain bordered on the east by Lillooet River and the west by Ryan Creek. A few wetlands are still intact.
The Millers are protecting a 40-acre wetland that remains at the northwestern corner of their land. Pure, uncontaminated water drains down from the mountains to replenish the forest and wetland where beavers and amphibians thrive. It is not uncommon to see grizzly bear, bobcat, wolves, and coyotes at the edge of their farm. They want to support habitat by restoring some riparian areas along Ryan Creek and creating a wildlife corridor across the valley.
