Beavers can be hard to live with but did you know that beavers are critical in creating habitat for many different species of bird, fish, and other aquatic mammals? On the evening of Wednesday, August 27 you are invited to join The Land Conservancy of BC in an informative presentation about beaver ecology, non-lethal management and how to coexist peacefully with this national symbol.

Doug Martin, a Senior Ecosystems Biologist with the Ministry of Environment, has worked with various groups, including the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Ministry of Forests and Range, trying to maintain the balance between people and beavers.  His work with beavers has had many successes including a beaver stop by Corbin Creek Mine.

Kathryn Martell, Kootenay Area Manager at The Land Conservancy of BC, studied beaver ecology as part of a graduate degree at the University of Alberta.  Her research focused on the interactions of beavers, roads, and forest management, and the key role that beavers play in shaping streams, wetlands, and habitat for a vast variety of other creatures.  The Land Conservancy is hosting the workshop as part of its continuing Kootenay Stewardship Program funded by the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund and BC Hydro.

The Land Conservancy of BC is a registered charity and land trust protecting natural areas and cultural landmarks in B.C.  Since 1997, The Land Conservancy of BC has protected over 120,000 acres of sensitive and threatened lands around B.C., involving more than 300 projects.  The Land Conservancy of BC has grown to include over 7,500 members, and is now part of an international network of National Trusts with over 7 million members.
